Coffee Shop Review; Manna, Chorleywood
Within a few months of living in Chorleywood I was already a self-confessed expert of the coffee shop scene. I was spoilt for choice and before Rootz opened Manna was the fav. It used to be my first choice for a nice coffee date. It had lots of space, great food and plentiful outside seating for sunny days.
If I’m really honest I think my estimation of Manna has gone down a little since the competitions gone up. The food is still incredible- especially lunch-type savoury food. I had a pea soup recently that I think made me understand the real meaning of true love.
They’ve also had a refurb which has included nice pictures and layout and also a toilet available for customers, which puts me so much more at ease to go there.
They don’t have sofas so I wouldn’t go there to lounge. And while it’s nicely decorated I don’t know if it’s got the laid back atmosphere of its two main Chorleywood rivals.
Why choose Manna, then? I would choose Manna if I was meeting someone for lunch and fancied soup or quiche or a jacket potato. They do great sandwiches and salads too, but so do Morgan’s Deli so it’d be a tough choice, and I may be tempted to head that way. And I’d also opt for Manna if it was a really sunny day and wanted some nice time outside soaking it up.
I will always be quite thankful to Manna for the time I spent writing there in the summer of 2009… although time was always limited in those days because at some point after a pot of tea I’d need a wee so severely that moving on to a place with a designated urination area was a matter of the utmost importance.
Everything is of a great quality, I’m not knocking it, I just feel like it’s missing some key ingredients I hope for, for a truly superior coffee shop visit. Something a little bit atmospheric and less sterile to put you at ease, a sofa here or there, more conversational staff, and longer opening times too.
I’d give it an understated 6 out of 10, because it’s nice, but it’d quite rarely be my first choice.
PS- Bit of trivia. If you find Manna on Google Street View I’m there outside it having coffee with other youth workers within the first few weeks of my living there! (Lame to fame).
